The Faldo Junior Tour Nepal Championship is back after a gap of four years and the new edition of the tournament is scheduled for April 10-12 at the Royal Nepal Golf Club.
The Nepal Golf Association started the prestigious tournament in 2012 and it was stopped after the coronavirus pandemic. The NGA revived the tournament with a three-year agreement with Faldo Series and the golf governing body is organising the event next week.
The tournament features three categories in boys’ 12-16yrs, boys’ 17-21yrs and girls’ open. Around 40 golfers will compete in the 54-hole tournament, informed NGA acting General Secretary Deepak Acharya. The winners in all three categories will qualify for Faldo Series Asia Grand Final to be held in Vietnam and Spain. “After the tournament, we will send the names and scores to Faldo Series and the organisers will finalize the list for Vietnam and Spain,” said Deepak.
Golfers from Pokhara, Dharan, Chitwan and Kathmandu will take part in the tournament. “The NGA will bear the expenses of four players and a manager from each club,” said Acharya. The NGA has added an Under-10 category in the tournament and they will play over nine holes on the final day.
NGA President Tashi Ghale hoped for support from the National Sports Council. “The NSC has always helped us in organising tournaments and we have requested them for support in the event,” said Ghale. The estimated budget for the tournament is one million rupees. NGA Senior Vice-president Pavitra Kumar Karki and Treasurer Kishan Agrawal were also present on the occasion.
