France’s Leon Marchand has won gold in the 400m individual medley swimming at the Paris Olympics.

The domestic spectators celebrated with great joy as they set a new record in the Olympics with gold.

He swam in 4 minutes 02.95 seconds while breaking the record set by American swimmer Michael Phelps at the Beijing Olympics in 2008. Phelps was also in the audience as Marchand won the record gold.

He defeated Japan’s Tomoyuki Matsushita by 5.67 seconds. America’s Foscher won the bronze.

Marchand, 22, is France’s main medal hope at the Paris Olympics. Due to this, there was a large presence of domestic spectators during his matches.
